21.The Most Lovable & The Most Beautiful Secret

Although little May lived in a beautiful home, she was very lonely.   Her mother had died when she was five years of age and since that day her father no longer was the same.   He never went to church and,  when she tried to play games as she used to when mother was alive, he would tell her that she was too noisy or he would go out of the room.

“Children,” said the teacher,  “I shall teach you a new prayer today and I want you to say it very often.   ‘Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You!’   You must always trust the Heart of Jesus.”   May raised her hand for permission to speak.   “Sister, must we trust Him just the same when He takes our mother away?”  “Yes, dear, for perhaps Jesus knew that if mother had lived she would have had to suffer and He wanted her to be happy in heaven.”   When school was dismissed, the teacher gave the lonely little child a picture of the Sacred Heart with the words,  “Sacred Heart of Jesus,  I place my trust in You!”   May was delighted and said,  “I shall make Daddy say it.”

Mr. S. was smoking when the little child approached him and asked him to teach her the new prayer that was on her picture.   He repeated the words, but May was not satisfied and asked him to say them over again.   To please her, he did so.  She left the picture on his desk where he could not help seeing it.   For several days she would come and ask him to repeat the words.   At last he began to think of the meaning and, wherever he turned,  the eyes of the picture seemed to pursue him.

One day May burst into the room where her father was writing and said,  “Daddy,  I have the loveliest and beautifulest secret you ever heard!”   Her father smiled and asked what it was.  “I am going to make my First Communion on the Feast of the Sacred Heart.   Daddy, Sister said we could offer it for mother.  I think mother will be in heaven with the Sacred Heart, looking down on us.   Will you come, Daddy?   Then we shall always be happy.”   “I shall think about it, dear,”  was the gentle reply.

After May had gone, Mr. S. sat buried in abstraction for a long time.   Then he took the picture of the Sacred Heart in his hand as he thought of the child’s words.  Yes, he knew his wife had died full of confidence and love for God.   He had failed in faith and trust, but now he resolved to follow his little daughter was leading him.   He, too, would place his trust in the Heart of mercy.
